Kitchen Garden Location:

Itasca, Illinois

Custom Garden Design:

Together with the client, we designed a layout to contain three 10×4 raised beds for the kitchen garden, plus one bonus raised bed for a flower garden. (It’s always a good idea to mix flowers in your kitchen garden, because they attract pollinators that will keep your plants healthy! The Chicago Botanic Garden website has a great list of flowers to plant in your vegetable garden.)We painted the raised beds with a non-toxic gray milk-paint finish to match the color palette of the family home.

Kitchen Garden Installation Process:

From the outset, this kitchen garden was designed to match the family’s home, a modern farmhouse. We carried the white, black, and gray color palette from the house into the garden, painting the raised beds to create one cohesive aesthetic throughout the property. The custom trellises connecting the raised beds were designed with a square rod look to stay consistent with the existing lines of the home.

This garden is a beautiful addition to the family‚Äôs landscaping makeover and pairs with a new patio pergola and outdoor bar to create a true oasis in the backyard. Can’t you just imagine hosting a garden party here? It’s the perfect outdoor space to entertain guests.

Client’s Favorite Part:

As first time gardeners, the family is looking forward to enjoying fresh food straight out of their kitchen garden each summer, instead of having to go to the grocery store. Mother and daughter are embracing a healthy garden-to-table lifestyle by incorporating more garden fresh foods into their diets with salads, herbs, and veggies.

We love to see family members enjoying the garden together. Did you know the garden provides a the perfect platform for kids to learn skills that can help them build a healthy, balanced life? Be like these guys and bring your kiddos in the garden with you, and watch your whole family reap the benefits.
