I recently had the pleasure of talking to At the Lake magazine about the benefits of organic gardening. For many, standard practices of big chain grocery stores (shipping in produce from thousands of miles away, using chemicals to artificially keep produce looking fresh, and throwing out hundreds of pounds of food a day) do not align with the health goals they value. Couple that with the steadily increasing prices of groceries, especially organic produce, and it’s no surprise that families are searching for alternatives.

When you grow your own produce, you know exactly where it came from, how it was cared for, and that it was harvested and enjoyed at its peak nutrition value. Not to mention the benefits of putting the phone down, turning the TV off, getting off the couch and enjoying the natural benefits of being outdoors and working with your hands. For me, gardening has always been a meditative practice that brings me back to my roots and instills a sense of calm. I’m sure we could all use a little more zen in our lives!

Jeanne and Verdant Nolan and Liz Friemoth, gardening experts in the Lake Geneva area, joined me in talking to At the Lake and together we laid out a comprehensive plan to pave your way into organic gardening. Check out the article for a step-by-step process of starting your own organic garden. And remember, if you’re starting the project from scratch and need someone to bounce ideas off of, I’m always here!
